Light Therapy Equipment Maze
by Dr. Kevin Keough
Confused By All Those Light Therapy Equipment Designs? It's easy to become confused and frustrated when you try to purchase light therapy equipment. Different types, brands, features, sizes and shapes, and unfamiliar concepts and terminology can make the process seem overwhelming. We have developed a way to simplify the process of selecting the right light for you. First we will will describe and provide images ofthe five different types of light therapy equipment currently available. Then, we will provide general guidelines for the use of each type.
1) Light Boxes
Light boxes are
available in various shapes and sizes. Each one has been created work
effectively in different settings. Some lights are placed in a stand
that allows you to tilt them. Some are designed for easy
maneuverability. Other units are small enough to sit on a desk or end
table.
2) Desk Lamps
Desk lamps look and
function like ordinary desk lamps when tilted downwards. Tilted
upwards, they provide the same brightness and effectiveness as light
boxes. These units appeal to people who want their light therapy
equipment to serve two functions. They are popular with college
students and adults who intend to use their equipment in the workplace.
3) Dawn and Dusk Simulators
These
units function like alarm clocks. Most are also equipped with
traditional alarm clock functions. Dawn simulators gradually increase
the light level in your bedroom shortly before awakening. This gradual
increase in intensity simulates a sunrise.People who have difficulty
falling asleep use the dusk simulator to simulate a sunset. This
gradual decrease in light intensity triggers your body's sleep
response. These units are popular for anyone attempting to develop
healthy sleep patterns and those who need a little motivation to get
out of bed.
4) Light Visors
Light visors contain a
light source built into baseball cap-like hats. These units are popular
with people constantly on the go because they allow you more freedom of
movement while still receiving bright light treatment.
5) Mini-Lights
Mini-lights are
typically 5 inches tall x 6 inches wide x 1.5 inches deep and are very
popular with business travelers, students, and shift workers. They are
portable, fit most anywhere, and have adapters for use in cars and
trucks.

General Use Guidelines
Which Light Therapy Unit Should You Choose? We have outlined some
general guidelines for selecting the light therapy unit best suited for
you.
* First, choose a model that will work for you given your
surroundings. Some people know that they will not be able to stay close
to a light because they will be moving around in a room—perhaps
cleaning, caring for children, exercising, etc. If this is the case, it
is important that you pick a light box that will give you greater
intensity. Typically, these are the largest size of the light boxes.
* Choose a light that fits into your life style. It is very important that you pick a model that will be the most convenient for you to use—otherwise you are wasting your money. If you sit at a desk during the day and would find it easier to use the unit during that time, choose a desk model, a small light box, or the mini-light.
* Consider the "look" of each type of equipment. It is important to choose a light that is attractive to you. Some people like the look of a mini-light or a smaller light box, while others prefer a larger one.
* A small percentage of people are sensitive to bright light and
glare. In this case, it is worth choosing either the "green lights"
offered by Sunnex Biotechnologies or a unit with a white backing.
Are 10,000 lux Necessary For The Best Results?
The standard light intensity in the industry is 10,000 lux at a specified distance. This intensity will give you the least amount of recommended usage time.
Safety and Effectiveness
The two most important issues are whether the product has been proven to be both safe and effective. Remember, this is a product you will likely use on a daily basis for a significant part of the year (or perhaps year round) for many years to come. You'll want to purchase a product that is safe, effective, comfortable, and convenient for you to use.
